7 Cool and Cheap Things to Do in Berlin Friedrichshain

The vibrant Friedrichshain district of Berlin is surrounded by Mitte, Prenzlauer Berg, and the multicultural Kreuzberg. The fact is the boundaries of what we know as Friedrichshain is usually difficult to ascertain and some areas may on occasion be incorrectly identified as belonging to places it shares boundaries with.

However, Friedrichshain is growing, thriving, and overflowing with creativity from quirky cafes to cool galleries, fantastic restaurants, bars, museums and grass-roots hangouts as well as a buzzing nightlight all these making it an exceptional place one needs to explore.

In this article, I’ll walk you through this urban space, listing 7 cool and cheap things you can do when next you visit this amazing district.

Here we go!

  1. Accommodation

On arrival one of the most important things to do is look for accommodation, a place where you can comfortably relax especially after a long day of touring the city. Friedrichshain is one of the popular hotel districts throughout Berlin, and here you can get accommodations in different ranges – from the international luxury hotels to notable art and design hotels or even the B&BS apartments and hostels.

For a truly comfortable stay and experience visit the MOXY Berlin Ostbahnhof Hotel as it gives you a feel of complete luxury and excellent service yet at a cheap and pocket-friendly price. Here you will definitely have every whim catered to, and personally, I think there could be few better places which offer such experience.

Things to do

  1. East Side Gallery

This should be on top of your to-do list as it is one of the must-see in the Friedrichshain district and one of Berlins most popular tourist attractions. After the Berlin Wall was brought down, this memorial is now the longest stretch of the wall still standing in the city today. This 1.3km stretch is currently the world’s largest open-air mural collection with over 100 paintings from artists around the world. Murals with various political statements and significance have been painted onto the walls to create this gallery.

  1. Märchenbrunnen

Another must-see in this beautiful district is The Fairytale Fountain. Tucked into the south-western entrance to the Volkspark Friedrichshain, this amazing water fountain could make you say a million words. The sculptures around the fountain represent characters from fairy tales that were famous at the time it was built (1893-1913) – Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Red Riding Hood, Snow White, etc.

Every spring this fountain is brought to life, and it runs through autumn, if you visit during this period make sure you endeavor to catch this magnificent scene.

Eat

  1. Fame Restaurant

When it comes to food, this restaurant has proven to stand out – with great food and a vast array of cuisine influences. The design from the outside to the dining will sure meet your fancy, it also offers delicious meals at very reasonable prices and is just the right spot to satisfy your cravings. Please do well to make reservations.

  1. Haubentaucher

Although having a couple of drinks at this bar may just be an appetizer for the long night the city holds, Haubentaucher is worth a visit. Just behind the brick walls of the graffiti-festooned RAW Gelände. The area seamlessly blends into the urban beach club; the heated outdoor swimming pool and the shade provided by the vine-garlanded garden lounge. The bar and club simply carry the party into the night

  1. Night Life

Clubbing in Berlin is rightly world-renowned, and Friedrichshain shares in the fantastic nightlife. So if you are a late-night lover or you just want a feel of the excitement, then step out in the late hour of the night, and you’ll see what all the fuss is about Berlin nightlife.

One interesting fact is that there is certainly no shortage of choices when looking for somewhere to go. From great selection of bars to clubs for spot-on merriment, there’s a palpable sense of excitement in the air, and the locals are painfully cool, young, and invariably looking for a good time.

Astra Kulturhaus is the right spot for party rosters that love electro, techno, indie rock and other sounds across that spectrum.

Market

  1. Wochenmarkt Boxhagener Platz

For those that’ll love a visit to the market, this market is known for its fresh fare along homemade liquers, exotic spices, smoked fish, global cheese selection and a variety of other unusual culinary delights.

Friedrichshain is a great place to visit, with lots of interesting places and things to do, there should never be a dull moment.
